The Spiderwick Chronicles and Wanted Movie Reviews, FBS Exclusive Excerpts, and Reviews! - June 30, 2008

Submitted by Patrick on Mon, 2008-06-30 07:11.

The Spiderwick Chronicles: A movie that made its own buzz in the box office and has been eagerly awaited for DVD release. Well, Damon was able to get his hands on a Blu Ray DVD copy (Hooray, Playstation 3!) for review. You can check out his review here and discuss it, or the book, here.

Whether it be through book contests, giveaways, or excerpts, FBS is committed to bringing new releases to the fans. This week we have four new exclusive FBS excerpts:

- The Night Sessions by Ken Macleod
- Rain Dogs by Gary McMahon
- Sly Mongoose by Tobias S. Buckell
- Wicked Gentlemen by Ginn Hale

Last week we mentioned Jay Tomio's recently released contributor list for Heliotrope issue five. That list is as follows (Vertical lists are perfect for debut notifications. Horizontal lists are proper protocol once brought to light): K.J. Bishop, Hal Duncan, Neil Gaiman, Rhys Hughes, Paul S. Kemp, Alan Moore, Chris Roberson, Bryan Talbot, Catherynne M. Valente, and Jeff VanderMeer. Click on each of the above author's names to learn more about them (If I could not find an official author site, there is no link. If I missed it, e-mail me) and be sure to check back at Heliotrope.com for further updates.

The Summer 2008 edition of Spinetingler was released earlier this month. It may have features brought to you by the likes of Patti Abbott, Amra Pajalic, Stephen D. Rogers, Allan Guthrie, Steve Mosby, Tony Black, Brian Lindenmuth, Grant McKenzie, John McFetridge and others, but it is also full of reviews, book excerpts, and other specials that are worth checking out. You can visit them all at SpinetinglerMag.com.

Do you currently have a blog that you would like to be able to have reach a larger reader base or are unsure as to where to have it hosted? Well, we can help with both of those problems as we are now hosting Wordpress blogs! Damon goes more in-depth in the forums here, but it boils down to having FBS host your blog so you can be added to a blog roll on the FBS home page that is bound to get a ton of hits. If you are interested, hit up the forum thread or e-mail the admin.

Do you currently utilize the ease of purchasing items online? Then why not order them through FBS's affiliates? When you do so, FantasyBookSpot gets a small kick back that we use to help run the site. Best of all, there is no extra charge to you! So, what are you waiting for?

This week we have not just book reviews, but movie reviews as well! Damon breakdowns the recently recently on Blu Ray DVD The Spiderwick Chronicles while Brian is able to tease us with his Wanted review. JeffSullins, Jeremy, and Valashain (Hehe, stick with the program, Val! This week everybody was only doing one review! (j/k)) also submit some excellent reviews this week. Enjoy!

Futurama DVD Review and Heliotrope Issue 5 Contributors Released - June 22, 2008

Submitted by Patrick on Sun, 2008-06-22 23:26.

To me, Futurama is one of the funniest shows - not just in the realm of "cartoons" - out on the market today. That is why I was glad to hear that Damon was doing a review of one of 20th Century Fox Television's newest DVD releases, Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs. Matt Groening, who also brought the world The Simpsons, did not fail to disappoint in this feature as Damon points out: "Since I got to watch this one early it means an even longer time before I get to watch the third part, as Bender would say, “Well, I’m boned”. Be sure to check out his full review here and discuss the movie/his review here.

Jay Tomio recently dropped some big news over at Heliotrope.com: The contributor list for issue five of Heliotrope. This list has some astounding writers, and writers of this caliber will not be demeaned by being placed on a horizontal plane. A vertical list is most appropriate; that way each enjoys their own line. Only first-class here at FBS.

Commence the vertical list!

- K.J. Bishop
- Hal Duncan
- Neil Gaiman
- Rhys Hughes
- Paul S. Kemp
- Alan Moore
- Chris Roberson
- Bryan Talbot
- Catherynne M. Valente
- Jeff VanderMeer

Exclusives: "It’s what we do." (Bodhisattva, The. "Bookspot Round-up 6/19/2008." Jun. 2008) This week we have two doozies: Something New by Simon Strantzas and Suzy, Led Zeppelin and Me by Martin Millar. Something New is a story from a larger collection titled Beneath the Surface, and we get a sneak peak of the first three chapters of Suzy, Led Zepplin and Me. Be sure to check them out.

There are two items I mentioned last week that are worthy enough to be brought up again: Jay's interview with Steven Erikson (no "c" this week) and Brian Lindenmuth's article Post Mortem: Uncovering the Real Ending of The 50/50 Killer by Steve Mosby. Read them. You can thank me later.

Do you currently have a blog that you would like to be able to have reach a larger reader base or are unsure as to where to have it hosted? This was going to be the week of reviewer-do-duo, but Valashain failed to heed the memo and ruined it for everyone. So, if you can find the strength to continue on in light of this disappointment (it would be a mistake if you did not), then read the reviews below as they are gems!

The Real Ending of The 50/50 Killer by Steve Mosby, Spinetingler is Live, and a Steven Erikson Interview! - June 16, 2008

Submitted by Patrick on Mon, 2008-06-16 00:42.

Brian Lindenmuth, the man that lies behind far more than just the mystery scene, released an article called Post Mortem: Uncovering the Real Ending of The 50/50 Killer by Steve Mosby. Brian delves into The 50/50 Killer by Steve Mosby with breakdowns of individual sentences and paragraphs as he strengthens his case for "the real ending" to the book. It is rather intriguing, even to one who has not read the book as of yet. However, with this piece I am going to have to go check it out! Further discussion regarding the article is taking place here, where the author himself came by to post some thoughts.

Spinetinglermag.com has released its Summer 2008 edition! There are all sorts of short stories this issue, with the likes of Patti Abbott, Amra Pajalic, Stephen D. Rogers, Allan Guthrie, Steve Mosby, Tony Black, Brian Lindenmuth, Grant McKenzie, John McFetridge and more gracing the cover. Be sure to check out the awesomeness here.

Like Jay has been known to do in the past, he has brought us yet another simply amazing interview with a simply outstanding writer, Steven Erikson. Erikson has written numerous novels, most notable of which may be the ones that reside within the Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen. This is a very in depth interview that turns over a multitude of stones. This interview can be compared to one of those blockbuster summer hits that is enjoyed the third and fourth time through.

FBS has two more exclusive excerpts this week for us all to enjoy: The Physiognomy by Jeffery Ford and Falling Off the World by Tim Lebbon. The excerpt we have of Ford's piece is actually two chapters long while Lebbon's is a part of a larger collection, The Second Humdrumming Book of Horror Stories, Selected by Ian Alexander Martin. Be sure to check them both out!

New Issue of Spinetingler is Live! Summer 2008 - June 14, 2008

Submitted by Damon on Sat, 2008-06-14 09:55.
The Mysterybookspot Crew along with some design help from the Fantasybookspot Crew has put out the lastest issue of Spinetingler and it is HUGE. Both in terms of size and content. You can check out the pdf directly at http://www.spinetinglermag.com/pdf/summer2008.pdf and the HTML version at http://www.spinetinglermag.com/library/s08/index.html I would love to post the TOC but it is just too HUGE. Directly from the Spinetingler Site though: It’s almost summer, and that means shorts. Featuring stories from Patti Abbott, Amra Pajalic, Stephen D. Rogers, Allan Guthrie, Steve Mosby, Tony Black, Brian Lindenmuth, Grant McKenzie, John McFetridge and more. This issue of Spinetingler has more shorts than even the average woman needs to survive the heat.

FBS Exclusive and Reviews! - June 8, 2008

Submitted by Patrick on Sun, 2008-06-08 21:38.

FBS has been working extremely hard to bring excerpts of new and upcoming releases to the FBS exclusive library so we can all have a taste of a multitude of books. The past weeks we have stocked the shelves with Fable with Turkish Coffee by Rhys Hughes, The Funeral, Ruined (a short story within Paper Cities: An Anthology of Urban Fantasy) by Ben Peek, Harvest of Changelings by Warren Rochelle, and Nano Comes to Clifford Falls by Nancy Kress, and this week we have yet another FBS exclusive, Template by Matthew Hughes. In the past few years Matthew Hughes has made a buzz with two other releases, The Spiral Labyrinth and Majestrum, so if you enjoyed those two offerings be sure to check out Template!

If you have yet to read the exceptional pieces in Heliotrope issue 4, it would be in your best interest to set aside some time to read them as they are simply awesome. Ian R. MacLeod, Nick Mamatas, Sandra Ruttan, Anna Tambour, Catherynne M. Valente, and Jeff Vandermeer all grace the pages of the most recent issue. Plus, some of them have pieces in the previous issues. If you would like more information on Heliotrope or would like to read past issues, check out HeliotropeMag.com.

Rather than focus on one thread for this week, I thought it would be neat to have a "Theme of the Week", which is what are you currently reading/have already read in June? This is a topic that gets its own thread every month for several genres, so no matter what you are reading you have somewhere to share with your fellow Book Spot members! To discuss the theme of the week select the following genre that your read falls under: Fantasy, Science-Fiction, Mystery/Crime, Romance, Horror, or Comic Book/Graphic Novel. Drop your thoughts on why you loved a book or why we should steer clear!

There are six reviews this week, the average rating of which is just shy of 8.5! You know what that means? Some great books to add to your ever growing "To Be Read" stack!

Another FBS Exclusive and Reviews! - June 1, 2008

Submitted by Patrick on Sun, 2008-06-01 23:19.

Building on one of last week's themes, FBS has another exclusive book excerpt! This week it is Fable with Turkish Coffee, a story from a Rhys Hughes collection of stories titled Less Lonely Planet. It is a fun read so I know you will enjoy it!

Heliotrope issue 4 is still as great this week as it was last week. If you have yet to check out the pieces showcased by Ian R. MacLeod, Nick Mamatas, Sandra Ruttan, Anna Tambour, Catherynne M. Valente, and Jeff Vandermeer, I would recommend going to HeliotropeMag.com right away!

As I had mentioned last week, FantasyBookSpot is expanding its capabilities by now hosting Wordpress blogs. Damon goes more in-depth in the forums here, but it boils down to just about anybody having FBS host their blog so they can get on a great blog roll that is bound to get a ton of hits, and what blogger does not want a tons of hits? So, if you are interested, hit up the forum thread or e-mail the admin.

It has been a few weeks since I posted one, but this weeks Thread of the Week is Lawrence's Take a photo - current book, next 5 books. Like the title hints at, there are several pictures where FBS members have taken pictures of the stacks of books that they are intending to read. It is rather interesting, actually. So bust out those camera phones and get snapping!

The Week of Author Interviews, Book Excerpts, and FBS Hosted Blogs! - May 26, 2008

Submitted by Patrick on Mon, 2008-05-26 11:46.

If you have not heard the word, Heliotrope issue 4 has been released! Best of all, there are some amazing authors gracing the pages: Ian R. MacLeod, Nick Mamatas, Sandra Ruttan, Anna Tambour, Catherynne M. Valente, and Jeff Vandermeer to name a few. If you have not checked it out yet, I would highly recommend doing so here. A special forum has even been setup to discuss this issue, which one can find here. One more item I would like to point out is the bio section. This is a neat little area where one can learn a little bit more about the authors. Enjoy!

The FantasyBookSpot family is expanding as we are now going to be hosting Wordpress blogs. Damon breaks it down a little bit further here, but the bottom line is that it would be a great advantage for any author, publisher, publicist, fan, or whomever to host their blog at FBS because every blog will be in an RSS aggregator(Meaning every blog will have a link on the main site front page which will drive viewers to your blog in the droves), someone else will not have the power to remove your blog if they see fit, and there will be all sort of cool plug-ins for you to take advantage of! If you are interested, please e-mail the admin.

There are a myriad of interviews to enjoy this week. Jay had a chat with the exceptional Ian Cameron Esslemont, Brian joined Jay for a leisurely discussion with the always interesting Charlie Huston, and Craig_Gidney had the privilege of conversing with debut author David J. Williams. All three of them are great reads that I would definitely not miss.

To continue this week that is filled with awesome reads, FBS also has added to its exclusive book excerpts. I have saved some search time by listing them below:

New FBS Exclusives For This Week:

- Harvest of Changlelings(Chapter 1) by Warren Rochelle
- The Funeral Ruined by Ben Peek
- Nano Comes to Clifford Falls by Nancy Kress

Additional FBS Exclusives:

- The Ancient by R.A. Salvatore
- Crimson Orgy by Austin Williams
- Iron Angel by Alan Campbell
- Neuropath by R. Scott Bakker
- The Ten Thousand by Paul Kerney

Last but not least is the first part of Charlie Huston's Already Dead. The first few pages is all that you need to get hooked, so be wary; if you read it it will haunt you until you buy it and finish it.

This was a focus last week, but it is simply too outstanding to not mention again. Brian put together an amazing article titled "A Mystery/Crime Fiction Primer" that delves into all sorts of mystery sub-genres while breaking down individual authors. It is the must read piece of the summer so far. Be sure to not miss out.

Father's day is right around the corner. Make sure to not wait until the last minute to purchase that gift that will make all the dad's out there feel special. When doing so, why not buy them through FBS's affiliates? The site gets a kick-back, which aids us in running the site and offering you more goodies!

It's Heliotrope. Hooray Heliotrope! - May 19, 2008

Submitted by Patrick on Mon, 2008-05-19 03:51.

The first impression is supposed to be the most important, and issue 4 of Heliotrope made a lasting one with a marvelous cover. Teemu Vedenoja's creation that was used for the shell of issue 4 is already garnering a multitude of comments, the best of which is comparing it to "a live action Smurf house". However, thankfully for all of us, Jay (who can be found on an all new FBS channel at an all new FBS time) did not let the awesomeness end there; he procured an assortment of pieces that will enhance everybody's day. Leading off is a very interesting short-story by Nick Mamatas, who is then followed in the two-hole by Anna Tambour and yet another lovely piece of poetry. The heart of the order is filled with relative newcomers, but you may have heard of them: Jeff Vandermeer, Ian R. MacLeod, and Catherynne M. Valente. Vandermeer decided to enlighten us with a "Spotlight on Dedalus" by highlighting several novels that would be in everyone's best interest to investigate, Macleod adds to the virtual anthology that Jeffery Ford began last issue of Heliotrope, and Valente, well, does it really matter what she brings to the plate? She could use a half trollic eaten chopstick and hit one out of the ball park. Rounding off our all-star order is Sandra Ruttan and an excerpt of her book What Burns Within. To check out Heliotrope issue 4 in its entirety, click here. A special forum has even been setup to discuss this issue, which one can find here.

Brian, our resident "Awesome Man", put together an exceptional article titled "A Mystery/Crime Fiction Primer". I will let his own words speak:

A while ago here at FBS we had a contest to win a copy of The Blonde. And when the person who won the contest finished reading it he placed his thoughts in the review comments thread. One of the things that he said was: "Also, I know this is categorized as mystery, but when I think mystery, I think dead bodies and some kind of something that has to be figured out."

This to me speaks to expectations and pre-conceived notions. The very name of the genre, mystery, implies the solution of a crime, but the genre isn’t limited to just that type of story. Then in a private correspondence recently I was asked the following question:"I wonder which books are a good way to start to read mystery/crime novels more; to delve deeper in the genre."

And it's a good question, especially for a site like Fantasy Bookspot where readers of different genres rub shoulders with one another. But also for readers at large because the genre is big with a lot of different facets and it can be hard to know where to start.

Well, he went on to break down 128 authors (No typo, that is one-hundred-and-twenty-eight). Brian gave us more than just a starting point, he once again gave us an all access pass to a world that not many of us are enlightened of. Now though, we have no excuses not to be. Thanks, man. Check it out here.

In addition to the exclusive excerpts that FBS has been privileged to share recently (The Ancient by RA Salvatore, Crimson Orgy by Austin Williams, and Neuropath by R. Scott Baker), we are proud to host two more exclusives: Iron Angel by Alan Campbell and The Ten Thousand by Paul Kearney. For more information on these books, one can visit Alan Campbell's website or Solaris Books respectively.

There are currently two book contests to take advantage of. The first a lucky individual will take the spoiling's of Damon's visit to the 2008 New York Comic Con and the second has two copies of Cory Doctorow's Little Brother up for grabs. However, you have to hurry if you want to try and win either of these great prizes as they conclude in the next couple of days. For additional information go to our contest forum here.

Father's day is right around the corner. Make sure to not wait until the last minute to purchase that gift that will make all the dad's out there feel special. When doing so, why not buy them through FBS's affiliates? The site gets a kick-back, which aids us in running the site and offering you more goodies!

Happy Mother's Day - May 11, 2008

Submitted by Patrick on Mon, 2008-05-12 00:01.

For starters, I want to hope that all the mothers out there had a wonderful Mother's Day. There are so many great individuals that fall into the "mother" category and I know for a fact that many of us would not be here today without at least one. Thank you for all the awesome things you have done and shall continue to do in our lives.

If you have yet to read FBS's most recent exclusive...well, what are you waiting for? Check out the third chapter of R. A. Salvatore's newest release of the Saga of the First King series, The Ancient. Also, if you are interested, find out where the series started by reading Medsin's review of the the first book, The Highwayman.

The thread of the week this week falls back to an old favorite of mine that has brought around some interest: Lawrence's "I just bought" thread. I have always said that you can learn a lot about a person by seeing how they invest their money. Well, as the title infers, one can do just that! People are posting about new and fancy books that they bought, but I enjoy hearing about the great deals that people are finding on some old and new classics! Feel free to look around and drop some of your own purchases here.

Damon's book contest for some of the stash that he acquired from this year's New York Comic Con is still running. There is not much time left, but best of all, all you have to do is e-mail the admin to qualify! How much easier can it be?! For more details on the path that Damon took to get these books, click here for his 2008 New York Comic Con article. If you want to learn more about the contest, click here.

Val brings us another Robert Jordan and The Wheel of Time review, while a few new reviewers (JeffSullins and Medora) intermingle their reviews with some of our seasoned vets (Brian, dragonwomant, and Kiss Starling). Enjoy!

Submitted by Patrick on Sun, 2008-05-04 22:29.

Jay (The Bodhisattva) was able to pull an awesome FBS exclusive score: A third-chapter excerpt of R. A. Salvatore's most recent release, The Ancient. It is the second book in Salvatore's Saga of the First King Series. If you would like to learn a little bit more about this series, check out Medsin's review of the the first book, The Highwayman.

The yearly FBS New York Comic Con article: Damon's bread and butter. If you have yet to check it out, I would give it a run as it is an interesting read. Damon delves into all sorts of things. Plus, he has lots of pictures! Another of which I have posted this week. I think I am going to continue to do so for the next several updates. That is unless some more intriguing pictures surface. If you think you have something that can top Damon's pics, e-mail me. Check out Damon's article here. Also, Damon has a ton of goodies in a NYC Comic Con contest. All you have to do is e-mail the admin. Be sure not to miss out!

:HELPFUL REMINDER: Mother's day is one week away (It falls on Sunday, May 11, 2008). Do you know what you are going to get her yet? Whether it is flowers or a perdy watch or that diamond-studded, special edition Martha Stewart wok she has had her eyes on, purchase it through FBS's affiliates and help us out in the process! Do you think you might have what it takes to reviews books for a website? Well, we have openings for mystery, horror, and romance books at the moment. If you feel you are still interested - maybe even more interested - after reading the F.A.Q., then please write-up a review for a book that you have read and e-mail it to Damon.

2008 New York Comic Con and FBS Exclusive Playback - April 27, 2008

Submitted by Patrick on Sun, 2008-04-27 23:31.

The past few months FBS has been lucky enough to get some awesome exclusives, and exclusives are best not wasted. Therefore, if you missed them or want to enjoy them again, check them out below:

- Crimson Orgy Exclusive by Austin Williams (The Review of Crimson Orgy can be found here); and
- Neuropath Exclusive by R. Scott Bakker

Damon also recently released his yearly piece on the most recent New York Comic Con. I think he does a great job every year, but I think he did an exceptional job this year. If you have some time, I would definitely check it out (You can read his article here). He also took a lot of great pictures. You can view those pictures here and discuss them here.

Please keep in mind that you can purchase pretty much whatever you want through FBS's affiliates. When you do so, FBS gets a kick back (a.k.a. funds to aid in running the site), which makes Damon really happy. One thing to remember is that you need to keep the Internet window open after you select one of the affiliates. If you close out of the window and do not go back into that screen through the FBS affiliates page, we do not partake in the spoils.

Have you ever kicked around the idea of being a book reviewer for a website? Well, we have openings for mystery, horror, and romance books. If you are interested, please review our new F.A.Q. aptly titled "So You Want to be a Reviewer". If you feel you are still interested - maybe even more interested - after reading the F.A.Q., then please write-up a review for a book that you have read and e-mail it to Damon.

Not quite as many reviews as normal, but regardless, be sure to check them out!
